1. Do I Need to fast?

Certain tests that your doctor has included require fasting. These test include:

  • Glucose
  • Chem-12 Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
  • Chem-7 Basic Metabolic Panel
  • Lipid Panel or any test for Cholesterol
  • Renal Panel
  • Cardiac Panel

2. What is fasting?

  • Fasting requires that you do not eat or drink anything except water for 12-14 hours prior to lab test
  • All medicines should be taken
  • Coffee and tea are not permitted

3. Can I make an appointment?

  • Appointments for routine lab work are not necessary
  • Patients are seen on a first come, first served basis

4. Can I get a copy of my results?

  • If your physician permits you to have a copy of your lab results, "Copy to Patient" will be on the order
  • A copy of your results is available through Medical Records at Novato Community Hospital. Seven days notice is required.

5. Will my insurance pay for this?

  • The laboratories accept most insurances. Call the Business Office for details of specific insurances (415) 925-7500.
  • Certain test that are ordered are not covered by Medicare. In order to have the testing performed, Medicare patients are asked to sign an ABN (Advanced Beneficiary Notice) so the laboratory may bill you directly.

6. Where can I get information about what is included in a lab test?

The MyLab website provides a list of laboratory tests and what each lab suite contains.

The information on the MyLab website is not intended to be a substitute for consultation with a physician or other appropriate healthcare provider or annual physical examination.
