Joint Replacement Services
Offering comprehensive services before and after surgery.
Preoperative
A physical as well as lab work and an EKG are conducted. Some patients need to donate blood prior to surgery. Other pre-surgical services are provided as needed.
Physical Therapy: Pre-Surgery - This stage is required for some patients to help prepare for surgery. It includes strengthening, range-of-motion and flexibility exercises as well as nutrition and weight-loss programs.
Surgery
We use the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques that make it possible and easier for more people to have joint replacement surgery.
Patients are able to leave the hospital sooner and recover faster because of smaller incisions, less blood loss, less pain after surgery and fewer complications.
Surgeries are conducted in the state-of-the-art Surgery Suite, which has operating rooms specially equipped for minimally invasive surgeries. Following recovery from surgery, patients stay in the Patient Pavilion, where each room has a spacious, homelike setting.
Recovery
To ensure a smooth transition from hospital to home, a physical therapist and a nurse collaborate with each patient’s physician to create individual discharge plans.
The emphasis is on establishing a healing environment in which patients can get back to daily living activities as soon as possible.
The team assesses a variety of factors to determine whether discharge directly to the home or to a care facility (as an interim step) is in the best interest of each patient.
A physical therapist trains family members and in-home caregivers to provide patients proper assistance, including safety precautions and the use of supportive equipment.
Physical therapy is provided in three stages. Therapists develop individual regimens with a common ultimate goal of enabling every patient to resume a healthy, active community lifestyle.
Inpatient - Patients are taught to maneuver in and out of bed, conduct daily living activities, become ambulatory and keep moving. Therapists also teach patients to use assistive devices, such as canes and walkers. For patients referred to a care facility for further rehabilitation, physical therapy continues in those locations.
Outpatient - Therapists tailor treatment plans to help patients reach their personal goals. The focus is on strengthening, enhancing balance, improving gait and preparing patients for life with a new joint.
Most patients end up in better shape than before surgery as they are able to tackle many of the things they previously had to give up before surgery. Upon completing this stage, patients are welcome to use the gym at Sutter Terra Linda Health Plaza at a nominal charge.
